Objectives

Days Ground and Common Close are two residential streets situated in Shrivenham, Swindon. The streets consist of 37 properties, owned by the Ministry of Defence. Phase 1 of Shrivenham was a pitched re-roofing and internals project lead by Amey Defence Services LTD. Kingsley Roofing were the main contractors and work for Amey on various projects each year, ranging from around £250,000 to £1,250,000 in value.

Solutions

The structural roofing works included demolishing the existing chimney and structural repairs to the roof. This included bracing and fitting new timber noggins. Prior to this, the surveying and removal of asbestos took place, including soffits and chimney cowls.

The roof covering works included the supply and installation of new felt, battens and roofing tiles, insulating to 300mm depth where the existing was below 270mm. In addition, it included the replacement of the fascias, soffits, and rainwater goods, alongside SVP adaption.

Kingsley also replaced the flatroofs adjoining the main properties, and also of the lean-to roofs on required properties. Finally, we removed the worn-out existing canopies and replaced with cantilever canopies. To protect the bats, on the houses where bats were located, bat friendly felt was used with a bat tile on the roof and/or a bathouse on the installed on grounds of the property.

Additional works included the preparation and decoration of the front door, and new exterior lighting fitted above the front doors. Wherethe focal fire points had been removed, interior decoration such as flooring and wall finishes were carried out.

The completed roof was made up from Russell Highland concrete interlocking tiles in a cottage red. These were fixed according to the relevant fixing specification. Using the Russell Highland tiles, and the Russell dry verge, ridge and hip systems combined with the Russell dry fixed valley meant that the completed roofs complied with a 15 year product warranty and a pitched 15 year insurance backed guarantee. Furthermore, the flat roofs complied with the flat 20 year insurance-backed guarantee.
