Objectives

Kingsley Roofing London (KRL) carried out the waterproofing package for the new retail development Plough Lane inWimbledon.

This included four huge landscaped podium gardens (sitting above car parks) and 26 wildflower and bio-solar roofs. This was a complex multi-disciplinary roofing project using Triflex liquid waterproofing, non-combustible insulation, blue-roof, landscaping, brown-roof and bio-solar technologies.

With over 14,000 square metres of blue roof system and 22,000 square meters of water proofing, this is believed to be the largest blue roofing project in London, to date, and one of the largest in the country.

Solutions

As the lead roofing contractor, our package included the design, specification, supply and installation of the full external waterproofing, insulation, external landscaping and safety maintenance measure. This covered the four main podiums, 26 roofs, terraces and balconies.

The main requirement was to use non-combustible insulation and the waterproofing had to be flame free. We assisted the architect, Sheppard Robson, and developer Galliard Homes to put together a cold applied and non-combustible solution, which we provided by using products supplied by Triflex and Rockwool in a fully built-up system.

To meet the council's strict storm water limits, Plough Lane's ingenious blue roofs and podiums act as ultra-thin storm sponges, capturing rainwater and preventing flooding. These"blue SUDS" hold a million liters at peak, exceeding even a one in 100-year storm.

The project was delivered over 18 months, it had its challenges as this was during COVID-19 lock-down however the team managed to complete on time and on budget.
